Discuss the beginning and evolution of the Cold War. Include the idea of bipolarity in the answer. What was the Cuban Missile Crisis, and why was it so important in this evolution?
The Cold War had its roots in World War II, when the repeated
delays in opening a second front in Europe made the Russians
suspicious of the Western Allies' motives. Those concerns were
heightened when the United States discontinued lend‐lease aid to
the Soviet Union soon after the war ended.
The Cold War began after the surrender of Nazi Germany in 1945,
when the uneasy alliance between the United States and Great
Britain on the one hand and the Soviet Union on the other started

In June 1950, the first military action of the Cold War began when
the Soviet-backed North Korean People's Army invaded its
pro-Western neighbor to the south. Many American officials feared
this was the first step in a communist campaign to take over the
world and deemed that nonintervention was not an option.
Republicans were quick to claim credit for winning the Cold War.
They believed the military spending policies of the Reagan-Bush
years forced the Soviets to the brink of economic collapse.
Democrats argued that containment of communism was a bipartisan
policy for 45 years begun by the Democrat Harry Truman.
Cuban Missile Crisis began when the Soviet Union (USSR) began building missile sites in Cuba in 1962. Together with the earlier Berlin Blockade, this crisis is seen as one of the most important confrontations of the Cold War. It may have been the moment when the Cold War came closest to a nuclear war.
