explore your own stream of consciousness with prompts regarding early memories from childhood and family and your formative years. Before we get to that, which views of self or consciousness make the most sense to you? Is Freud’s idea of consciousness, including pre-conscious and unconscious, more on point, or do James’s thoughts on the stream of consciousness resonate more with you? Feel free to use personal examples to clarify your position.
I have had strong consciousness right from my childhood. I even remember instances that happened during my 3rd year, although not clearly but incidents' wise which even startled my parents when I told a few of them after I grew up. I am ot sure how I remember this when many say that they cant rember what happened even in the school days. Its ot an exaggeration at all to categorically mention that I remember almost everything from my 3rd year onwards. The way my brother and sister used to kiss me and leave for their schools and how i used to wait for them to come back from school, the way i was pampered by my parents and my first days at school and the year of my kindergarten that was written on the blackboard etc.
Although Frued's idea of psychoanalysis was turned down by many, I firmly believe in Freud's theory about dreams. Whenever I felt that something wasn't achieved and upset over that, I have had dreams of achieving it, if not immediate dreams but at later stage, and I felt very content and happy after awakening. So, I believe that subconscious mind keeps working when you are asleep.
