An object with a known mass starts from rest and speeds up to a final speed of v in a straight line due to the action of the complicated net force. Two students are tasked to final speed, One student suggests that they measure the force as a function of position, they obtain a data set(c,F). Will this suggestion help them find the final speed.

Answer #1

Yes, this suggestion will help to find the final speed of the object.

From the dataset of force vs position, the total work done on the object can be found out.

i.e the area under the curve F(x) vs x will give the total work done on the object.

From the law of conservation of energy, the total work-done on the object = change in kinetic energy of the object

where u = initial speed of the object = 0 (as the object starts from the rest)

As the value of the mass m is known, final speed v can be obtained from the above equation
