Test for Carbocation
Following a reduction of benzophenone to benzhydrol, a carbocation test was performed. Each sample was dissolved in a minimal amount of methanol and then concentrated sulfuric acid was added dropwise. What is expected to happen, or rather what indicates a carbocation is present? The general results I got where that for the benzhydrol product, the mixture was initially yellow, then settled to clear. When more sulfuric acid drops were added, it turned an orange like colour and opaque. For the benzophenone, the mixture was transparent and had a very slight pink tint.

Draw the mechanism for the formation of the carbocation obtained. Explain why the solution of this carbocation is colored. See below for information on the experiment: To test for a carbocation in a lab, we did the following: 1) Dissolve a small amount of diphenylmethanol into methanol, and add concentrated sulfuric acid dropwise. This caused the solution to turn yellow/orange. 2) Dissolve a small amount of benzophenone into methanol, and add concentrated sulfuric acid dropwise. The solution remained clear.

Q: Calculate the expected mass of both methyl salicylate and
aspirin assuming 100% yield.
EXPERIMENT7 PREPARATION OF PHARMACEUTICALS Fischer Esterification Reactions Almost 2500 years ago, physicians such as Hippocrates recommended that patients chew on the bark of the willow to alleviate pain. The active ingredient in willow bark was found to be salicin, a compound made of a molecule of salicyl alcohol bonded to a p-D-glucose molecule. In the stomach, the bond between...

In this laboratory exploration various reactions of copper will illustrate these properties. First, begin with copper metal. When concentrated nitric acid is added, dramatic changes occur and the metal dissolves forming a brightly colored copper ion-containing solution.
