Individualist and collectivist culture:

Individualist cultures, such as those of the United States and Europe, emphasize personal achievement regardless of the expense of group goals, resulting in a strong sense of competition. Collectivist cultures, such as those of China, Korea, and Japan, emphasize family and work group goals above individual needs or desires.

People from individualistic cultures are more likely to have an independent view of themselves (they see themselves as separate from others, define themselves based on their personal traits, and see their characteristics as relatively stable and unchanging).

On the other hand, people from collectivistic cultures are more likely to have an interdependent view of themselves (they see themselves as connected to others, define themselves in terms of relationships with others, and see their characteristics as more likely to change across different contexts).

Traits of Collectivism

  1. Each person is encouraged to be an active player in society, to do what is best for society as a whole rather than themselves.
  2. The rights of families, communities, and the collective supersede those of the individual.
  3. Rules promote unity, brotherhood, and selflessness.
  4. Working with others and cooperating is the norm; everyone supports each other.
  5. as a community, family or nation more than as an individual
  6. strong cohesive group.

Traits of Individualism

  1. "I" identity.
  2. Promotes individual goals, initiative and achievement.
  3. Individual rights are seen as being the most important. Rules attempt to ensure self-importance and individualism.
  4. Independence is valued; there is much less of a drive to help other citizens or communities than in collectivism.
  5. Relying or being dependent on others is frequently seen as shameful.
  6. People are encouraged to do things on their own; to rely on themselves.
  7. people strive for their own successes.
