1. Describe the colonization and formation of plaque and dental carries. Who are the key players? What conditions must occur for tooth decay to begin?

Dental caries forms due to the presence of dental plaque a structurally complex and functionally organized microbial biofilm. The microbial composition of dental plaque is modified by numerous factors such as food remains the ingestion of excessive sugar and poor personal oral hygiene skills all of which contribute to the formation of cariogenic dental plaque which harms dental enamel and causes dental decay. The composition of the oral microbiota has been successfully studied using molecular techniques that have identified a high diversity of species many of which are unculturable in vitro.

Conditions: Tooth decay can occur when acid is produced from the plaque which builds up on your teeth. If plaque is allowed to build up it can lead to further problems such as dental caries or holes in the teeth gum disease or dental abscesses which are collections of pus at the end of the teeth or in the gums.
