Answer #1

The reaction between acetic anhydride and alcohol occurs in 1:1 mole ratio. Even thoughthe volume of alcohol is constant, the mass of the alcohols are different. Because mass = volume * density. Different alcohols have different densities and hence same volume of alcohols have different masses as well different moles.

As, different moles of alcohols are used , the moles of acetic anhydride will be required accordingly. Mass = Mole * Molar mass. So, for different tests with varying alcohols, mass of the anhydride required will be different and subsequently you have to take different volumes of the anhydride.

Volume = Mass/ density
