Now that we have learned about the three main branches
of ethical theory (consequentialism, nonconsequentialism, and
virtue ethics), which approach would you want a President of the
United States to excel at in his or her own life and work? Why do
you think it is more important for a President to live by this
approach to ethics as opposed to the other two?
Please, no written response.
Consequentialist theories focus on the outcome or the results of the actions, non-consequentialist theories focus in the actions and not on the outcomes and virtue ethics emphasizes on the moral agent and not on the action or the outcomes but on the person doing the act. In my opinion, non-consequentialist theories such as the deontological theory is the best theory which the presidents of the United States of America should adopt. It’s because of the fact that the presidents should focus on living as per the guidelines and constitution which would make them more neutral because all the documents would focus on treating the citizens equally irrespective of race, class, religion etc. Consequentialist theories would focus on the majority while tolerate the negative effects on the minority people. Virtue ethics focus on people and there is no guarantee that people would remain same throughout their life because of the changing social, political and economic scenarios.
