Helium is used in a laboratory as carrier gas for a gas chromatograph. The helium is
stored as a pressurized gas in a cylinder initially at 4000 PSIG and is slowly withdrawn from the
cylinder. It is important that the helium pressure at the gas chromatograph is constant at 45
PSIG, with a simple single-stage pressure regulator (set at 45 PSIG) installed between the helium
cylinder and the chromatograph. In another project in this lab, liquefied ammonia is stored in a
tank and is withdrawn as pure vapor for an experiment, a single stage regulator is used between
the tank and the experiment.
Task:
Explain in the box below:
What might happen to the delivery pressure of the ammonia and the helium to the experiment
and the gas chromatograph, respectively, over time until the tank and cylinder, respectively, are
emptied? Why?

Case 27 To Use or Not to Use? Beaufort Sea Production Company (BSPC) operates a medium-sized oil field on Alaska’s north coast. The field is still producing at its maximum rate, 325,000 barrels of oil per day (BOPD). However, to sustain this rate the company started a waterflood of the reservoir two years ago. Now a capacity bottleneck in the water disposal process is threatening to curtail production. In waterflooding, salt water from the Beaufort Sea is treated to remove...
