The primary risk here while upgrading the server and database will be the compatibility of the new version with the existing system. As the database and servers will be updated the programming code and configurations used in the system needs to be evaluated and validated in order to ensure if the system is compatible with the latest upgrade and in case of any issues with the compatibility, the system may fail or may not behave as expected.

In order to mitigate such a situation, the most important aspect will be impact analysis and that needs to be conducted during the planning phase of the project. The impact that the change will have in the whole system needs to be realised and also each and every minute details needs to be considered because one small miss from the planning side may cause a major failure of the system. The business consultants and technical team needs to sit together and highlight the areas and make sure that the areas are find out and actions are taken accordingly.
