Q23 Explain the meaning and definition of the term ‘Experiment’. [2 Marks]
The answer to Q 23:
Definition of the experiment:
Experiment refers to the process undertaken to discover new facts or to test the existing facts, or explain the fact under a controlled environment.
Explanation:
The experiment is a process in which the researcher attempts to find something new or to prove existing theory using different variables. For instance, a researcher wants to test whether basic management functions (planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling) improves organizational performance. In such a situation, the researcher selects some organizations (group 1) in which the researcher implements the basic management functions accurately and study the performance for some time. On the other hand, the researcher identifies other organizations (group 2) in which no changes are made in implementing basic management functions. Here, group 1 is called the experimental group, on which the variables are going to be tested. The other group, group 2 is called the control group. The whole process of testing is called an experiment.
Example from healthcare: If a researcher wants to test the impact of exercise on the health of people, the researcher will create two groups. group one will be trained and given regular sessions of exercise, while the other group will live as of earlier. After a definite period, the researcher will compare the health of people of both groups. the process conducted to test the hypothesis is called an experiment.
