Discuss the three eras described in your textbook (Trait Era, the Behavior Era and the Contingency Era) and describe which era you think describes effective leadership the best, and why? Leadership in trait era

Leadership is assumed in in-born talent. People having proper leadership traits are considered to be true leaders. Characteristics of leadership in trait era are as follows:

• Profound knowledge in business

• Capability to take quick initiative

• A steady cognitive skill

• An outstanding creativity

• A good quality emotional intelligence

Leadership in behaviour era

The behaviour of a leader according to the situation, is the ultimate quality of leadership in this era. The focused behaviour approach ensures rational marketing potential. Characteristics of leadership in this era are as follows:

• Quality is judged according to the response of the leader in a different situation

• The behaviour of leadership is the ultimate parameter

Contingency era of leadership

Leadership in contingency era is depicted as the outcome of leadership effectiveness and response to a particular location. Styles and behaviors of leaders remain uninfluenced in this era. Approach and opinion in different situation is measured.

Characteristics are as follows:

• A smooth relation between leaders and employees where leaders much motivate employees

• The clarity in task allocation and task structure

• Leaders have positional power with strong support from subordinates

Out of all three eras, leadership in contingency era is best. Because leaders have a supportive approach towards employees. Moreover, they ensure an overall engagement of employees and subordinates.

Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple Inc, was a leader of the contingency era. He was supportive of his employees and had a positive approach to subordinates.
