Imagine a scenario with 3 species plus an ancestral sequence, and data consisting of a nucleotide sequence only 4 bases in length.

1. Draw a diagram for all possible phylogenetic arrangements of these three species and their known group.

2. On each phylogeny, CLEARLY indicate where and in what way there must have been a change in character state for each position in the nucleotide sequence.

The most parsimonious will be that requires the fewest evolutionary changes i.e., evolution with low cost or with minimal intermediates. So here the species 1 and 2 are more closely related.
