Leadership in Public or non profit sector is more oriented towards effectiveness of reaching the target audience / recipients of service, rather than achieving profitability and cost effetiveness. For achieving these targets, a leader does not need a sharp business acumen, money mindeedness and an ability to make tough business decisions oriented towards growth and market share, but some other attributes like service orientation, empathy, perseverance and a strong desire to make a difference in the lives of the people served. Cost effectiveness and sustainability are other desirable attributes, which make the business stand on its feet.
For being a successful leader, the person must know the work from the ground level and understand the difficulties one faces while on the field. He /she must know the hardships and pressing issues of the population served and should have insights to solve them. According to the trait theories and behavioual theories, the person should have empathy towards staff and followers, ability to motivate the followers to work in difficult and demanding situations without expecting much in return. He /she must have high level of integrity, never say die attitude, perseverance and passion for his /her work, which make him /her a great leader in these sectors.
