Watch this TED Talk from Gary Haugen, The Hidden Reason for Poverty the World Needs to Address Now. Explain your interpretation of the complexity of social class, poverty, and discrimination in terms of the interconnections among race, ethnicity, age, gender, and schooling. How are they related? How are they unrelated?
After viewing the video, social class, poverty and discrimination all play a role when we talk about these issues. The important issue that Gary bought up was how the poor was not protected by the law enforcement. He talk about various examples in his speech and walk us through various reasons why poverty programs are not being effective and the simple reason being they are not considering violence. Like race, gender, age and schooling they are interconnected with social class, poverty and discrimination, the way these factors are connected is if, you belong to a social class which can afford education, then you can protect yourself as you can escape poverty. Similarly gender, age and race doesn’t matter when you’re rich as you can hire private security. Like for example in Africa, protection is provided majorly by private security and the poor who cannot afford it, suffers the lack of law enforcement. When we talk about how they are unrelated, we can talk about the example of the woman, who called 911 because someone is trying to break into her house but because of budget cuts there were no officers available to dispatch. This shows us no matter what race or ethnicity you belong to, if there is no law enforcement available you cannot do nothing about crime.
