You are the director of the respiratory department at a large hospital. You were told by the finance department you are over budget in expenses. What stakeholders and other roles in the hospital would you collaborate with to determine why expenses are high? What is the rationale for who you selected?
The stakeholders to the problem
(i) In charge of purchase and stores - He would be able to provide data on purchase practices, storage costs, pilferage or wastage of medicines, slow moving and high cost items and other miscellaneous costs like insurance.
(ii) Building in charge - It needs to be examined if the existing infrastructure is being utilised properly and there is no undesirable cost being incurred. The utilities are being used sensibly and cost effectively and the compliance to regulations is adhered to.
(iii) Legal department - It will tell about the expenses incurred in penalties and legal cost of the lawsuits and other legal expenses.
(iv) In charge of operations - It will tell the efficiency and effectiveness of the processes, and the average utilisation of resources against the targets, and the reason behind the shortfall if any.
(v) Marketing person - The return on investment on marketing and other promotional expenses needs to be examined and corrected if the efforts are not yielding the desired efforts.
(vi) IT person- To ensure that the security systems are in place and no security breach that might lead to legal or compliance issues has happened. It also needs to be examined for a process outage which might have happened due to IT flaws and resulted in loss of business.
