There are various forms in which the virus genomes are present in the cells . They could be circular or linear .

However , in RNA viruses and certain DNA viruses the genome is divided into segments , each segment codes for a different protein . Such viruses are called segmented viruses.

Segmented virus share a common feature of exchange if genomes during co infection . This called as reassortment .

Studying the reassortment is viruses helps in studying the replication of viruses and how they spread . Therefore it is an important study in the disease spread by virus .
