I think this statement is false because protein kinase are important component of signal transduction pathway but they doesn't Directly detect extracellular signals . For example , extracellular signals bind on G-PROTEIN and it further activate adenylyl cyclase which produces ATP from cAMP . Then this cAMP activate protein kinase.
