Polio virus and dengue virus both are positive-strand RNA viruses. Their genetic material function both as a genome and as messenger RNA. By host ribosomes, this RNA is directly translated into the protein in the host cell. Through double-stranded RNA intermediates, the replication of positive-strand RNA occurs.
Polio virus is made up of an RNA genome and a protein capsid only. So, it is simplest virus. This virus is 7500 nucleotides long. While in case of dengue virus it codes for three structural proteins which are membrane protein M, Capsid protein C and envelope protein E. Even, they code for seven nonstructural proteins, which are NS1, NS2a, NS2b, NS3, NS4a, NS4b and NS5. So, these are a bit complicated one. This virus is 11000 nucleotides long. One more difference is there between these two viruses. Dengue virus has short non-coding regions on both the 3' and 5' ends, polio virus does not. Dengue virus attack respiratory system and polio virus attack nervous system.
How are poliovirus and dengue similar (physical properties)? What are their major differences?
