This will be the first of five current event article/news story summaries that you will do this semester. One of them will be something you present in class so please keep that in mind and volunteer early. Here are the instructions:
Find a current event that relates to conservation biology and answer the following:
(1) the name of the news source, article and date
(2) a one-paragraph description explaining the relevance of the article to conservation biology
(3) a short one-paragraph evaluation of whether the public was informed appropriate by this article: was the information accurate, was key information missing, was it a fair assessment or was it biased in some way?

Mountain gorillas get new IUCN Red List status as recent numbers show fragile increase- ARTICLE
Posted on 14 November 2018- DATE
CHANGE FOR THE BETTER- THE IUCN RED LIST STATUS OF MOUNTAIN GORILLAS (VIRUNGA NATIONAL PARK, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO) HAS CHANGED AS THEIR NUMBERS HAVE INCREASED.
The mountain Gorillas are found on just two places on earth that is , congo and Uganda. The great ape's status has now been changed from 'Critically Endangered' to 'Endangered' as survey results released in May 2018. The findings were the result of intensive surveying coordinated by the Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration and supported by the International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP – a coalition programme of Fauna & Flora International and WWF) along with other partners. The director of the Gorilla conservation program, WWF, Anna Behm Mosozera says that incredible commitment and efforts from so many individuals and institutions – from park rangers to policy makers to community members – and the donors and tourism industryhave supported in increasing the number of Gorillas. If the Gorillas are not conserved here than there is a great posibility of their being extinct. Their range is very limited as they are endemic to the two regions of the world only.
The WWF includes the public to be the volunteers for various programs they conduct to assess and conserve wildlife. The article was published on www.africanbudgetsafaris.com, www.theguardian.com, www.unenvironment.org and various other websites for public awareness.THe information showed increase in number of Mountain Gorillas to be more than 1000 in number.which is the key to determine the IUCN red list status. It was a fair assessment because the the continuing threats are still listed in the article and it is not an article which showed all good information. It also predicted that the future for mountain gorillas is equally hopeful and challenged, as they face the threats which could quickly undo the gains made – from the introduction of existing and emerging human disease to these subpopulations to the loss of protected habitat from infrastructure development. Safeguarding the Mountain Gorilla from these preventable threats should be our urgent priority.
