Opening Vignette Exercise: In this chapter’s opening vignette, you learned how MarineMax tries to tailor its job offers to specific candidates. Working in a group of three to five students, reread the vignette and be prepared to share with the class your answers to the following questions:
a. Do you think that it is ethical for MarineMax to give different new hires for the same job different amounts of pay and benefits?
b. Should MarineMax use a low, competitive, or high job offer?
Why? Should the company present a maximum job offer or leave room to negotiate? Why?
c. What can MarineMax do to increase the likelihood that the top sales candidates it recruits will accept its job offers?
Ans 1: It is ethical for MarineMax to give different pay and benefits although it is the same position. Candidates that go to MarineMax may have different skills and levels of expertise. For MarineMax to remain competitive and hire talented and highly motivated employees with leadership potential, MarineMax’s offers need to be better than their previous employer. Also, the candidate may have another offer and MarineMax may have to come up with a better offer for the candidate to accept their offer. Most job offers are based on skills and experience and most candidates know that
Ans 2: When presenting a job offer, a company should always put their best foot forward. A firm has many candidates that apply for open positions, and candidates also have many choices in firms. If the company considers the candidate to be worthy of a job offer, there is a good chance the same candidate is looking through several job offers before making a final decision. Presenting a desirable candidate with the maximum job offer will maintain the right image for MarineMax, and will uphold its reputation as an employer.
Ans 3: Benefits are an important part of a position and employees do look at those in addition to the job's salary when applying for a position (Foster-Thompson, & Aspinwall, 2009). The company can offer candidates benefits such as health and dental insurance, life insurance, retirement plan, standard tuition reimbursement, vacation time, including holidays, childcare benefits, and sick leave. The company should create a culture where employees can grow and develop. Knowledge of different benefits options can help MarineMax be more productive in recruiting, motivating, and retaining employees in a competitive marketplace
