The regulations on energy efficiency for ships are EEOI, EEDI and SEEMP. These regulations are Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator, Energy Efficiency Design Index as part of Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan. There is a voluntary standard ISO 50001 which is used to ensure the energy efficiency standards by the companies through implementing energy management system for taking measures to improve performance and reduce emissions. EEOI is applicable to ships which are operational by monitoring the energy consumption, reduce the emissions and improve the performance while EEDI is used in the designing of ships which are energy efficient. The IMO has made it necessary for every ship vessel to have its SEEMP.

The measures that shipping companies can take to achieve better energy efficiency on their ships are implementing the SEEMP ( Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan). The shipping companies can take various operational measures like using EEOI as a tool and observing the parameters like speed of the ship, operational maintenance, reducing the emission of the greenhouse gases, preventing loss of energy or heat through proper installations and reducing the fuel consumption by the ship. The shipping operations can be monitored and frequently assessed for improvement. The staff can be trained for better use of machinery and other techniques depending on the type of ships, cargoes and the routes on which the ships are operational. Efficiency in cargo operations and better coordination can lead to less energy consumption and responsible operations.
