Intradermal

It means the substances given in to the dermis layer of skin. This route is mostly used for sensitivity tests.

Volume - Up to 0.5 ml can be given in the Intradermal route.

Needle size - 26 to 31gauze

Angle - 5 to 15 degrees, No need to aspirate in the Intradermal route because there is no blood vessels in the dermis layer.

Drug - Tuberculin sensitive test, Antibiotic sensitive test.

Subcutaneous

The injection into Subcutaneous tissue

Volume - up to 1ml

Needle size - 25 to 31 gauze

Angle - It should be a 45degree angel but nowadays due to the modified needle you can give it at a 90degree angle. it should depend on the thickness of subcutaneous tissue.

You need to pinch skin identify asses to the Subcutaneous layer. You need to aspirate before giving an injection to ensure you are avoiding intravenous administration.

Drugs - Insulin, Low molecular weight heparin. vaccines like MMR and Yellow fever, etc

Intramuscular

inside the muscle

Volume - Upto 5 ml (Gluteal muscle) 2ml in (Deltoid muscle)

Needle size - 22 gauze

Angle - Angle should be 70 to 90 degree

Aspiration required for avoiding intravenous administration

Drugs - Lorazepam, haloperidol, Vit K, Hepatitis B vaccines, IPV and DPT vaccine, etc

Site - Gluteal muscle, Deltoid muscle, Vastus lateralis muscle
