Excited state electronic configuration of B is 2S12Px12Py12Pz0

in this excited state, it undergoes sp2 hybridisation.

In BCl​​​​3, boron atom undergoes SP​​​​​2 hybridisation. Each Boron has 3 hybrid orbitals with an unpaired electron.

These SP​​​​​2 hybrid orbitals overlap with p- orbitals of chlorine to form B-Cl sigma bonds.
