Answer #1

Given

Change in internal energy \Delta U = 191 kJ

Heat gained by the system (q) = 637 kJ

From First law of thermodynamics we have relation \Delta U = q + w

Where, \Delta U is change in internal energy , q is heat added to system and w is work done.

\therefore 191 kJ = 637 kJ + w

\therefore w = 191 kJ - 637 kJ = - 446 kJ

Negative sign indicates that work is done by the system

ANSWER : w = - 446 kJ

Correct statement : Work was done by the system .
