In a tide pool that measures 5 km x 5 km, a sample was taken to count the number of sea stars. The number of sea stars counted in the grid is shown below. The grids where the survey was taken were randomly chosen. Determine how many sea stars are in this tide pool using the random sampling technique. Show all work!

  1. The number of sea stars are already mentioned however the density of the sea stars can be calculated by using the formula:-
    1. Density = Total number of individuals in all the quadrats / Total number of quadrats
  2. The answer is 35 / 20 which comes to around 1.07 that is the density.
  3. This can be multiplied with the quadrat area to find out the overall population in the tide pool.

1.07 × 25 m2 = 26.75
