In organic chemistry, the hydrocarbon that contains two carbon – carbon double bonds in a compound is called diene. According to the location of double bonds, diene is classified into 3 types: cumulated diene, conjugated diene and isolated diene.

Fundamentals

Cumulated diene contains adjacent double bonds. The double bonds are shared by a single carbon (common) atom.

Example:

adjacent double bonds shared by 1 carbon.

Conjugated diene is the compound that contains two double bonds that are separated by a single bond.

Example:

Isolated diene is the compound in which two double bonds are separated by two or more carbon atoms.

Example:
