Exp. 11 Synthesis and Analysis of Aspirin 2. What functional group is created during the synthesis process that is found in aspirin, but not in salicylic acid? Draw aspirin structure and circle the group(s). 3. Consider both the IR scans of salicylic acid and aspirin. Has salicylic acid been converted to aspirin? Explain base on the IR data. Questions 1. Charlie the Chemist synthesizes aspirin. He tests the recrystallized product. The melting point is 159°C. What can he conclude about the product? What could have possibly happened? An unknown analgesic is spotted on the following TLC plate (the far most right X). Draw a conclusion about the composition of the analgesic. 2. Answer #1

2. Salicylic acid is the starting material and aspirin is the product of the reaction. It is a kind of acetylation reaction of salicylic acid. Salicylic acid has OH group and in reaction acetylation occur on this to form Aspirin. Aspirin lacks OH group and it has acetyl group.

Acetyl group (CH3-C=O) is created during the synthesis of aspirin.

  • The Sp3C-H in this new group will give peak around 2850-3000 cm-1 (due to stretch) in aspirin and will lack in salicylic acid.
  • The new C=O peak will appear around 1750 cm-1 due to carbonyl of ester (in addition to C=O of COOH group). It will lack in salicylic acid
