PROBLEM (5)
The wall of an air compressor's cylinder liner is 5 mm thick. When cold, the liner sits in the block with a diametral clearance of 0.05 mm. The temperatures of the liner and the block rise by 150 and 80 oC, respectively when on load. If the mean pressure in the cylinder is then 100 bars, determine the following:-
a- Contact pressure between liner and block - which are both of steel.
b- Maximum hoop stress induced in the liner.

Consider the pneumatic cylinder as shown in Figure 1 which is an illustration from the Starcyl space-saver range, as can be found in their Star2.pdf catalogue, www.starcyl.com. Some pneumatic cylinders can have a push/pull rod (item I in Figure 1) protruding from either head (item A in Figure 1), but this cylinder clearly has only one, making it a “single rod end” type of cylinder. This cylinder is however “double acting”, which means it can be pressurised on either side...

The spring is required to drive the clamp upward while removing or inserting a work piece. A clamping force of 10 lbf is satisfactory. The base plate is 5/8 inch thick. The clamp screw has a 7/16 in-20 UNF thread. Allow 0.05 inch diametral clearance between screw and the inner coil...
