Chapter 16 Reading Question 4

Part A

Which regulatory effects are results of internalized cholesterol?

1) It activates acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase.
2) It increases endogenous cholesterol synthesis.
3) It downregulates the production of LDL receptors.
4) It inhibits HMG-CoA reductase.

Statements 1, 2, and 4 are direct results of the internalization of cholesterol.
Statements 2, 3, and 4 are direct results of the internalization of cholesterol.

Answer #1

Answer - C - Statements 1, 3, and 4 are direct results of the internalization of cholesterol.

Internalized cholesterol increase means,

It decrease the production of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor and HMG-CoA reductase.

Normally HMG-CoA reductase leads to an increase of endogenous production of cholesterol.

But due to internalized cholesterol HMG-CoA reductase inhibits so, endogenous production of cholesterol decrease. So statement 2 is not possible.

QUESTION 1 George Beadle and Edward Tatum performed an experiment in which they made single-gene mutations in the bread mold Neurospora crassa. These mutations resulted in several Neurospora auxotrophs. Further analysis revealed specifically how the mutations affected synthesis of the amino acid in question. What was the significance of these results? A single gene encodes a single protein, in the case of this experiment, an enzyme. Enzymes are needed to synthesize amino acids. They showed that mutations are heritable. They...
