In the process of developing a research, there are five fundamental stages, viz,  

a. asking the research question

b. formulating hypotheses

c. collecting data

d. analyzing data

e. evaluating hypotheses

The steps are always interconnected. Without a proper research question, it is not possible to conduct a research. further, when the research question is determined, we need to set the hypothesis and the another hypothesis which challenges the null hypothesis. Later on, based on the hypothesis and the research question, necessary data is collected. and then the data is analyzed accordingly. Based on the result the hypothesis is evaluated and the corresponding conclusion is drawn.
