***QUESTION IS IN BOLD

Polly is a Ecologist/Zoonotic and Infectious Disease Specialist. She was on an expedition in the rain forests of Brazil looking for plant-based natural healing products. While she was on-site, she interacted with some of the Indigenous Peoples. Interested in learning more about their culture, she was captivated by the Blow Gun method of hunting they used. But as she was trying to learn more, she accidentally fell while holding the darts and pierced her left cephalic vein with one of the darts. Polly immediately experienced difficulty breathing, she could not talk or move her left side and just collapsed.

You have access to some portable equipment to monitor the heart and you are an experienced Field Medic in Tropical Areas. What are some possible tests you could perform given your setting (basically what could be carried in on backpacks) AND what is especially important to note with respect to Polly’s current condition?

Answer #1

Cephalic vein found in the radial end of the dorsal venous arch goes to the forearm passes along the arm to the shoulder region..cephalic vein just lying under the skin and it will be easily visible..when there is injury there will be blood clot formation patient may develop thrombophlebitis..so there will be interfere the blood supply and oxygen which go to the upper organs so patient may have Breathing difficulty and chest pain..it indicate there is a dislodged blood clot traveling through veins to lungs (pulmonary embolism).

In this scenario possible test can be performed with backpack equipment like vital signs monitoring..flash light can be used to see Patient pupil reaction..safety pin to her left side sensitivity..

Upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can cause pulmonary embolus and paralysis..Her left hand was immobile due to flaccid hemiplegia, she is at high risk for venous stasis and thrombosis in the arm ...We must focus more important to note with shortness of breath..Anticoagulant therapy can be given for the emergency purpose..This pulmonary embolism interfere venous return and in hypercoagulable states..It can also cause cardiorespiratory arrest..patient should be shifted to hospital immediately for surgical removal of embolus.
