Predicting the Weather

One of the places we tend to see probability use on a regular basis is the weather channel. For this assignment, you will use the binomial distribution to make weather-related predictions, and ultimately compare two locations.

New York State: In New York State, in April, the probability of snow happening on any given day is 0.3. Knowing this, use the binomial distribution (and your graphing calculator and textbook) to determine the probability of it snowing on four (4) days during a given week (7 days).

Pennsylvania: In Pennsylvania, in April, the probability of snow happening on any given day is 0.1. Knowing this, use the binomial distribution (and the resources mentioned above) to determine the probability of it snowing on four (4) days during a given week (7 days).

Provide a summary of 1-2 paragraphs in which you address the following:

Present the values you assigned to the components of the equation [n, p, q, x, P(X)]

Present the probability of snow on four days in a week for both locations.

Compare and contrast these probabilities.

Explain how this sort of prediction could be useful in everyday life.
