In Thin Layer Chromatography Experiments, would a more polar compound give a smaller or larger Rf value then a less polar compound? Explain your answer by referring to TLC theory (stationary phase, moving phase, polarity). Thanks!

The thin layer chromatography is used to separate a mixture of compounds that are non-volatile based on the differences in their polarity.

The stationary phase is highly polar that contains the mixture of interest to be separated whereas mobile phase is less polar that carries the substance.

Rf value is the ratio of distance traveled by the compound and total distance traveled by the mobile phase.

So if the compound is a more polar compound , then it will have a smaller Rf value then a less polar compound.
