I had been working in Genpact which is a professional service company. Since it belongs to the service industry, a lot of functional budgets are prepared for different process or business units. The following the few budgets which are prepared maintained in the company on a quarterly basis.

  1. Human Resource budget
  2. Revenue budget
  3. Production budget

For each line of service (like R2R, P2P, OTC, etc) a separate budget is prepared to decided the number of member for each team. Since each team member is to be paid salary for the work thus a limited number of personal can be employed keeping in consideration the cost. So here the key limiting factor is the cost allocated to the line of service.

Similarly a production budget is prepared to set the expected production to be delivered to the client from various teams. The client has set some standard expectation regarding the deliverables. The production budget is focused to meet those expectation proportionately from various teams. This budget helps to identify the output to be delivered by each employee. A flexible budget is also prepared at different production capacity level. This helps in identifying the optimum level and decision making.

Revenue budget is prepared to forecast the expected revenue from the client for different quarters. If we know the expected revenue then we can set out cost to each projects.

The functional budgets are prepared by the respective senior leader of each tower. It is then reviewed by the assistant vice president. And finally a master budget of these facts and analysis is presented to the Vice President.
