'As the twig is bent, so grows the tree'

Its a proverbial saying that indicates the influence of early chilhood habits have an influence in a man's or woman's personality. Evidences are there for the existence of this  saying ;that it was prevalent in the European community in 16th century itself. But the expressed words were different that' a man may bend a wand while it is green and make it straight though it be never so crooked'. The first ever recorded form of the saying is made by Pope Alexander at 18th century . He said in his epistles that " Tis the education that forms the common mind, just as the twig is bent the tree is inclined". Steven Robles again quoted the saying in a different way that says " as the twig is bent, so grows the tree".

The meaning: This proverb means that the child's early life habits are shaping his personality. If the habits are acceptable and good, then when he grows into an adult he will inculcate all this good things into his character. So the ultimate meaning is an adult will behave the way he or she was taught to act as a child.

Lifespan Human development and the application of the saying:

Lifespan Human development involves mainly five stages infancy, toddlerhood, preschooler, school age, adolescence and adult hood ( Erick Erickson). Before a man enters into his adulthood, his personality will develop fully. Along with the heredity environment also playing a major role in the development of personality. For example; According to Sigmund Freud in the oral stage of a child( infancy) , he gets proper attention and care then the child will develop trust as he gets pleasure orally. If the oral stage is not favourable for the child then insecurity and doubtness will grow in child that will reflect in the personality when the child grows into a man or woman.
