Safety consideration for benign prostatic hypertrophy

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is characterized by progressive enlargement of prostate gland commonly seen in man over age 50 causing varying degree of urethral obstruction and restriction of urine flow.

  • Encourage the patient to void every 2-4hour to minimize urinary retention and overdistension of bladder.
  • Encourage fluid intake 3l daily to maintain renal perfusion.
  • Monitor vitals especially BP to identify renal status.
  • Monitor weight and maintain I and O.
  • Recommend sitz bath to decrease edema and enhance voiding.
  • Catheterization to prevent urinary retention
  • Administration of antibiotics and analgesic to prevent infection and pain respectively.
  • Life style changes are the following
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol
  • Transurethral procedure reduce the risk
