US patent is a limited Monopoly which is given by the Federal government for new invention.A patent allows the holder to deny the privilege of using the patent by others..However patents can be purchased as well as sold .There can be wilful patent violation when a business brings a product in the market without taking heed of violation.There may be unintentional violation too.Patent violation is very common nowa days . As for eg a American company can make a new product, manufacture it in Japan ,sell the product in Germany ignoring the fact that it is a patent product.of Europe.
