Key points:

1) Use silence:Gives the pt. the opportunity to collect and organize thoughts or to introduce a different topic of greater concern that the one at hand.

2) Accepting: Conveys reception of the message and regard.

3) Giving Recognition: Acknowledging; indicating awareness. Better than complimenting, which reflects the nurse's judgment.

4) Give broad openings: Allows the pt. to take the initiative in introducing the topic; emphasizes the pt's importance in the interaction.

5) Presenting reality: When the pt. has a misperception of the environment the nurse defines reality or shares his or her perceptions of the environment.

6) Attributes of an Effective Communicator:

-experience
