Some of the benefits of genetic screening are

  • Can help to identify the risk for any disease in future(cancer) or disorder and take appropriate actions (lifestyle modifications, diet ,exercise, etc.,) to prevent it
  • Can help in diagnosis and exact treatment
  • The family members, childrens ,siblings can be alerted about the risk of any specific disease and take precautionary measures

The potential detriments of genetic screening are

  • It can disturb a person's emotionally or psychologically ,thinking of its necessity or not ,results
  • It can be expensive
  • If done on a pregnant women to screen the fetus for congenital abnormalities then it can pose a risk for miscarriage (Amniocentesis)

It can be recommended to a friend if they are at high risk of certain diseases and for diagnostic purposes.This helps them get knowledge about their family history of any disorder generation after generation and get trested.

The services provided by a genetic counselor are

  • To be an advocate for the patient to their health care provider
  • They counsel the patient
  • They go through the reports and counsels the patient in the availability of options
  • The services are specially given to pregnant women ,cancer services,cardiovascular ,pediatrics ,research and in neurological cases are counselled and guided by them
