But there is always an evolutionary fight between them and the various plant species to evolve better for the mechanisms applied by the the other(like toxins released by the plants).So they don't have the much specialization to fight against that toxin as they frequently change the food ,so there is no room for selection and evolution. However, a monophagous insect is confined to one plant or different plants of related species this gives them harsh conditions to live sometimes but they have better adaptations to fight against the defense mechanism of the host. So Monophagous or oligophagous insects are more successful in evolutionary point of view because they don't only bring variation in themselves but also in the plant species they feed on.
