A wrongful act defined as a crime in the state / federal laws is considered a crime. This is a kind of behaviour that violates the public rights and affects whole society. Tort is an act that injures or interferes with other person or his /her property. In crime, if it is established, the individual is punished to deter him /her and others in the society from committing similar acts in future, while in case of tort, the individual has to compensate the other party for its loss incurred.
Some crimes are also torts when the act is intentional. For an example, an act of assault against an individual is both a crime and a tort, where a person is liable to pay damage for the injuries suffered ( tort) and violation of law ( crime). Some torts may not be crime. Such as causing damage to the property of neighbour through a fire that broke out due to negligence of defendant.
