During OXIDATION reactions, electrons are released.

During a(n) REDUCTION reaction, they are bound to NAD+ or NICOTINAMIDE ADENINE DINUCLEOTIDE to form NADH, or the reduced form of NAD+.

Because NADH is HIGH ENERGY, it can then release electrons during further reactions to do work.

Therefore, the reaction above describes how NAD+ captures HIGH ENERGY electrons to create NADH.

This means that the reactants side of the reaction has a LOW ENERGY, whereas the products side of the reaction has a HIGH ENERGY.
