Answer #1

Grain in data warehouse

The grain of a fact table defines the level of detail that is stored, and which dimensions are included make up this grain. Obviously, the higher the grain the better- although source systems and data volume/performance may intervene.

Normalization

The process of organizing data into tables in such a way that the results of using the database are always unambiguous and as intended. Such normalization is intrinsic to relational database theory. It may have the effect of duplicating data within the database and often results in the creation of additional tables.

Denormalization

The process to speeding up read-oriented data retrieval performance in a relational database, where the database administrator selectively adds back specific instances of redundant data after the data structure has been normalized. A denormalized database should not be confused with a database that has never been normalized.

Business Intelligence

It refers to a set of methods and techniques that are used by organizations for tactical and strategic decision making. It leverages technologies that focus on counts, statistics and business objectives to improve business performance.
