Answer the same 5 questions for each of the experiments
described below:
a.) Identify the design (be specific; e.g., 2 x 2 repeated measures
factorial design)
b.) Identify the independent variable(s)
c.) Identify the dependent variable(s)
d.) Identify possible main effects
e.) Identify any possible interactions
Design #1
A researcher investigated the effect of a child’s hair length on
judgments of personality and intelligence. Teachers were shown
photographs of children to obtain their “first impressions” of the
children. Each teacher was shown a boy or girl whose hair was
either very short, shoulder length, or very long. Teachers rated
the friendliness of the child and estimated the child’s
intelligence level.
Design # 6
A researcher is interested in the ability to learn about different
things. He thinks it is easier for younger people to learn about
pop culture while it is easier for older people to learn about
historical facts. Further, he thinks that the very young will learn
best about technology. In order to test this hypothesis, very young
(1215), young (16-34 years old) and old (35+) participants read an
article about technology or an article about history or an article
about pop culture. Their memory for the information is tested.
1a. This is a 2 x 3 between subjects factorial design.
1b. The independent variables are gender and hair length.
1c. The dependent variables are perceived friendliness and intelligence.
1d. The effect of gender on perceived friendliness and intelligence is one main effect. Whereas, the effect of hair length on perceived friendliness and intelligence is another main effect.
