Oxytocin is a short peptide hormone secreted by the hypothalamus. Towards the final stages of gestation, there is an increase in the number of oxytocin receptors on uterine smooth muscle cells, which causes increased "irritability" of the uterus. Oxytocin is released during labor promotes contraction of uterine smooth muscle to support parturition. Another function of oxytocin is to cause contraction of the myoepithelial cells that surround the alveoli of the breasts to cause milk ejection. Oxytocin also influences the maternal behaviour.
