SOCIOLOGY: SOCIAL GROUP
(DOWN TO EARTH SOCIOLOGY)
1. Based on the article “If Hitler asked you” analyze the
power/influence of social groups in your life. Try to think of a
situation in which you felt uncomfortable that the group had as much
influence over you as it did. Analyze your resistance or other reactions to that influence or power.

Social groups play a huge role in influencing individuals and their mind sets. Humans are social animals, therefore they thrive in groups and prefer to stay that way. The amount or magnitude of influence a social group has over an individual chances with age. For example, if we were to look at a teenager, they would be more gullible and overpowered by their peer group as compared to a 40 year old who is already settled in life with a group of close friends.
A situation when I felt uncomfortable was during college. A group of friends would want to smoke between classes and this was considered as bonding/gossiping time. I hate the smell of nicotine and it would really make me uncomfortable. However, to be a part of the group, I tried in the beginning. I did not like smoking or inhaling passively either. Slowly, I started making excuses so I would not have to go out and smoke. They tried to mack me and poke fun at me but eventually i felt this was the right thing to do and told them so. This really helped me to become more assertive and confident. They tried hard to pressurize me but in the end I won.
