For checking the effect of pesticide on the tumour development in the plants, a graph of concentration of pesticide v/s number of tumours developed is drawn with.  

x - axis (horizontal) = Concentration of pesticide (in mg/ml)

y - axis (vertical) = Number of tumours developed.

Independent variable = Concentration of pesticide (as it is not varied by the number of tumours developed in the plant) i.e. X-axis.

The other two things kept constant in the experiment:

  • All the physical factors including the temperature, exposure to light and water availability should be kept the same. It needs to be made sure that the effect is solely due to the pesticide and not due to any other environmental factor.
  • The age and the growth of the plant. All the plants used for this experiment, should be generated by in-breeding to the same age and the growth pattern.

One appropriate Control for the experiment:

Plant kept under the same conditions but not supplied with the pesticide, can be a control for the experiment as it should ideally yield a negative result for tumours. And if it doesn't, it means there could be some other possible factor contributing to the phenotype.
