First, let me name three process perspectives on Motivation, these are as stated below:

  • Goal Setting theory
  • Expectancy Theory by Vroom
  • Equity Theory

Here, let me chose one theory or process perspective that I believe best suited to help a manager effectively lead his or her employees, now let me define my choice:

Vroom has considered three variables; these are expectancy, instrumentality and Valence, as with consideration of such variables, manager could lead their employees much effectively.

These variables are as stated below:

  • Every employee thinks that they will work with more efforts, so, they could increase the performance. Hence, they expect for improving their result or performance by working harder.
  • Here, employee thinks that they will get good result or better return if they perform much effectively. It is part of the variable – instrumentality.
  • Here, employees want to put more importance on certain expected outcome, they could consider that they want to earn more money or they could consider they want to receive more incentives, hence, they will feel least bother for time. It is part of the variable – Valence.

Here, Manager could provide more incentives based on performance, so, employees will least bother for time, and they would improve their engagement with the works or tasks. Manager could transform their employees by telling them that they will get good result like promotion, incentives, salary hike, if they perform well in the tasks and projects. Manager could build several stories and share such with employees, where, it will show that how employees are performing harder and they also received better performance as they have worked harder.
