Answer #1

Mutations can be a process which lead to generation of new functions from a gene in organisms. Mutations are the alteration of sequence of the DNA. Mutation can be helpful or harmful for an organism. Due to alteration of sequence, reading frame changes and during gene expression, a new protein is generated. This protein may be helpful for the organism in harsh conditions and to adapt to the environment in a better way. However, this new protein is not found in ancestral species. This type of genetic variability passed into generation after generation and also shared with existing bacteria by horizontal gene transfer. This is how mutations contribute to evolution.

Other similar processes are alternative splicing and movement of transposons etc.
